Online casinos that accept a Capital One Mastercard: why the deposit counts as a cash advance
By Maureen Tessier · last checked
A Capital One Mastercard usually works in a casino cashier, but the deposit is not treated as a purchase. Capital One's cardholder agreement, effective September 1, 2026, counts bets and casino chips as cash-like transactions, which it bills as cash advances: interest from the transaction date, with no grace period. Here is the wording, what the big five banks say, and the cheaper route from the same bank account.

What Capital One's agreement says
Capital One Canada's cardholder agreement defines a cash advance two ways: money taken at a banking machine, "or b) A Cash-like transaction".Source [1] It then defines that term:
"Cash-like transaction: Any Transaction involving the Purchase of items directly convertible into cash, including wire transfers, money orders, bets, lottery tickets, gambling or casino gaming chips."
So a casino deposit on the card is billed as a cash advance. The agreement is explicit about the interest: "Interest on a Cash advance… is charged from the Transaction date until it's paid off. There is no Grace period on Cash advances."Source [1] It adds that "fees for Cash advances are treated as Cash advances", so the fee itself earns interest from day one.
What that costs on a Guaranteed Mastercard
The Guaranteed Mastercard page lists a standard cash-advance rate of 29.9%, or 21.9% in Quebec, the same as its purchase rate. It also states the grace period of at least 25 days applies to new purchases, with "no interest-free grace period on cash advances".Source [2] Other Capital One cards show a range of 21.9% to 29.9% on the comparison page, without a separate cash-advance line.Source [3]
The fee in dollars is not online. The agreement says "all the fees that we charge… are set out in the Disclosure statement" you receive with the card.Source [1] Check yours before the first deposit.
The big five say the same
We read the cardholder documents of Canada's five largest banks on September 25 and 26, 2026. None says it declines gambling transactions; all class them as cash-like:Source [4]Source [5]Source [8]Source [9]Source [10]
| Card issuer | Gambling in the agreement |
|---|---|
| Capital One | "bets, lottery tickets, gambling or casino gaming chips" — cash-like, cash advance |
| CIBC | "casino chips, online gaming, casino transactions, betting, wagers, and lottery tickets" — cash advance |
| RBC | "gaming chips or bets at kiosks or online casinos" — cash-like |
| Scotiabank | "casino gaming chips and gaming transactions" — cash-like |
| TD | "legal online wagers" among cash-advance items |
| BMO | "casino gaming chips and gaming transactions" — cash-like |
The phrase to avoid is "Canadian banks block gambling". The documents describe a pricing rule, not a block.
Wallets funded by card
Topping up a wallet with the card doesn't always avoid the rule. MuchBetter's own help centre warns that "some banks may treat this transaction as a cash advance".Source [6] The code the merchant uses decides it, and you see the result on the statement.
How to deposit without the cash advance
- Check the casino lists Interac e-Transfer in its cashier.
- Send the deposit from your chequing account, not from the card.
- Your bank sets the fee and the limit, typically $2,000 to $3,000 per transfer per Interac.Source [7]
- Check the withdrawal list too, since card payouts are limited at many sites: one casino in our tables pays card holders back by Visa only.
Pros and cons of a credit card at a casino
Pros
- Accepted in most cashiers we checked
- Deposit shows at once in the casino balance
- No separate wallet to open or verify
Cons
- Cash advance: interest from the transaction date
- 29.9% on the Guaranteed Mastercard, 21.9% in Quebec
- Payouts to a card are limited; Visa only at some sites
My verdict
A Capital One Mastercard will usually go through, and that is the trap: the deposit costs interest from the same day, at 29.9% on the Guaranteed Mastercard. If you already have a chequing account, Interac e-Transfer does the same job without the cash-advance line. Keep the card for purchases and use the Interac route for the cashier.
Questions people ask
Can I use a Capital One Mastercard at an online casino?
Casinos that take Mastercard usually accept it, but Capital One's agreement classes bets and casino chips as cash-like transactions, billed as cash advances with interest from the transaction date.
Does Capital One charge a cash advance fee for gambling?
Its agreement says fees are set out in the disclosure statement you receive at account opening, and that cash-advance fees are themselves treated as cash advances. The dollar amount is not published online.
What interest rate applies to a casino deposit on a Capital One card?
On the Guaranteed Mastercard, capitalone.ca lists 29.9% for cash advances (21.9% in Quebec) on September 26, 2026. Interest runs from the transaction date.
Do Canadian banks block gambling on credit cards?
The agreements we read don't say so. CIBC, RBC, Scotiabank, TD, BMO and Capital One all treat gambling transactions as cash-like, meaning cash advances, rather than declining them.
Is there a cheaper way to deposit from the same bank?
An Interac e-Transfer from your chequing account is not a credit transaction. Its fee is set by your bank and often included in the account plan.
